Thomas Edison State University (TESU) charges $449 a credit for New Jersey residents and $584 out of state (August 2026 term), and 42% of all students who started in 2017-18 earned an award within eight years (College Scorecard, October 2026). Scorecard has no net price or six-year rate for TESU: College Navigator says it “did not admit full-time first-time undergraduate-level students.”

Check your aid before you choose TESU

Your Pell estimate, a possible state grant, Work-Study and federal loan limits under the rules for the year you start (2026-27 or 2027-28). About two minutes, no name or email. It assumes full-time study, and part-time Pell is prorated. TESU's financial aid office sets your actual offer.

In fall 2024, 98% of TESU’s 6,707 degree-seeking undergraduates studied part-time. Scorecard’s $7,044 is its 2025-26 tuition-and-fees figure, not your bill: undergraduates outside nursing pay by the credit or, on the flat rate, $3,595 for a term of 9 to 18 credits (New Jersey, August 2026 term).

If you worry each class will cost over $1,000 out of pocket, and that single classes get no aid, TESU’s own table puts a 3-credit course at $1,347 for a New Jersey resident. Federal aid there needs at least 6 credits a term in TESU’s online or Guided Study courses.

MSCHE last reaffirmed TESU’s accreditation on November 17, 2022, and its next self-study evaluation is in 2029-2030. TESU’s accreditation page says MSCHE “is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).”

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredits its bachelor’s and master’s nursing programs and its Doctor of Nursing Practice, TESU says. TESU’s mission, in College Navigator, is education “for self-directed adults.” Our guide to regional vs national accreditation explains what the accreditor labels mean for you.

TESU charges $449 a credit for New Jersey residents and $584 out of state

TESU's tuition from the August 2026 term, from its tuition pages read October 27, 2026: $449 a credit for New Jersey undergraduates on the per-credit plan
What you take Tuition
Undergraduate, per credit, New Jersey residents (Pennsylvania residents included) $449 a credit
Undergraduate, per credit, out-of-state residents $584 a credit
Undergraduate flat rate, 9 to 18 credits in a term $3,595 a term (New Jersey), $4,652 (out-of-state)
RN to BSN $317 a credit, in-state or out-of-state
Military rate, non-nursing undergraduate programs $250 a credit
Graduate programs, except nursing and doctoral $695 a credit, or an $18,000 master's flat rate per degree
What you take Undergraduate, per credit, New Jersey residents (Pennsylvania residents included)
Tuition $449 a credit
What you take Undergraduate, per credit, out-of-state residents
Tuition $584 a credit
What you take Undergraduate flat rate, 9 to 18 credits in a term
Tuition $3,595 a term (New Jersey), $4,652 (out-of-state)
What you take RN to BSN
Tuition $317 a credit, in-state or out-of-state
What you take Military rate, non-nursing undergraduate programs
Tuition $250 a credit
What you take Graduate programs, except nursing and doctoral
Tuition $695 a credit, or an $18,000 master's flat rate per degree

TESU says most undergraduate programs, except the BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A bachelor’s degree in nursing. Registered nurses can earn it in an RN-to-BSN program., let you “begin a new course every month,” in 12-week terms. On TESU’s own comparison table, 12 credits in one term cost a New Jersey resident $5,388 on the per-credit plan or $3,595 on the flat rate.

The flat rate does not apply to nonmatriculated, nursing, military or graduate students. Per-credit tuition does not cover textbooks, and TESU also charges a $50 application fee and a $98 graduation audit fee.

The military rate covers active duty, Guard and Reserve service members, their spouses and dependents, and Defense Department civilians. In-state tuition needs New Jersey domicile “for a period of 12 months prior to enrollment,” under the state rule TESU’s catalog cites.

Up to 90 community college credits can count, and two TESU courses never transfer

TESU’s rules, from its transfer page and catalog: up to 90 credits from community colleges, and up to 90 credits toward a bachelor’s (45 toward an associate) from ACE and NCCRS recommendations. No more than 70 credits in one subject count toward a bachelor’s.

From a four-year school, “you may fulfill all your degree requirements with transfer credit except the two required courses from TESU”: SOS-1100, its information literacy course, and the capstone. TESU “will not accept transfer credit from any source” for those two.

Students on the per-credit or flat-rate plan also “must complete 15 credits” of TESU’s own online, Guided Study, Accelerated or e-Pack courses. Paying the $3,468 Edison Accelerate fee cuts that to the 6 credits of the two required courses.

Example, by our math: New Jersey tuition at $449 a credit for the credits left in a 120-credit bachelor's such as TESU's BA in Liberal Studies, plus the $50 application and $98 graduation audit fees, if every outside credit counts
Credits accepted Credits left at TESU Tuition and fees
60 60 60 x $449 + $148 = $27,088
90 30 30 x $449 + $148 = $13,618
105 15 (the residency minimum) 15 x $449 + $148 = $6,883
114, with Edison Accelerate 6 (the two required courses) 6 x $449 + $3,468 + $148 = $6,310
Credits accepted 60
Credits left at TESU 60
Tuition and fees 60 x $449 + $148 = $27,088
Credits accepted 90
Credits left at TESU 30
Tuition and fees 30 x $449 + $148 = $13,618
Credits accepted 105
Credits left at TESU 15 (the residency minimum)
Tuition and fees 15 x $449 + $148 = $6,883
Credits accepted 114, with Edison Accelerate
Credits left at TESU 6 (the two required courses)
Tuition and fees 6 x $449 + $3,468 + $148 = $6,310

The last two rows need more than 90 accepted credits, and community college credit or ACE and NCCRS credit alone stops at 90. Out of state, 15 credits cost 15 x $584 = $8,760 against 6 x $584 + $3,468 = $6,972 with Edison Accelerate, by our math.

If your last 15 credits are the residency credits, here are three ways a New Jersey resident could meet the residency rule. TESU’s flat rate covers 9 to 18 credits of its online, Guided Study, Accelerated and e-Pack courses in one term.

Example, by our math: three ways a New Jersey resident could meet the residency rule, tuition and the Edison Accelerate fee only, August 2026 term prices
How you take them Cost
15 credits on the per-credit plan, over several terms 15 x $449 = $6,735
Edison Accelerate, then the 6 credits of the two required courses (the other 9 credits are not waived: they still have to be earned, from accepted outside credit as in the 114-credit row above or from other TESU credit at its own price) 6 x $449 + $3,468 = $6,162
All 15 credits in one 12-week term on the flat rate $3,595 (TESU's table: $3,140 less than per credit)
How you take them 15 credits on the per-credit plan, over several terms
Cost 15 x $449 = $6,735
How you take them Edison Accelerate, then the 6 credits of the two required courses (the other 9 credits are not waived: they still have to be earned, from accepted outside credit as in the 114-credit row above or from other TESU credit at its own price)
Cost 6 x $449 + $3,468 = $6,162
How you take them All 15 credits in one 12-week term on the flat rate
Cost $3,595 (TESU's table: $3,140 less than per credit)

The flat-rate row means 15 credits in 12 weeks, above the 12 credits a term that TESU’s Pell rules call full time.

Edison Accelerate also has a time rule. TESU’s page: “If a student pays either the Edison Accelerate fee or does not graduate within 15 months, they will be required to pay an additional Edison Accelerate fee.”

TESU’s evaluation decides what counts, not this table. It evaluates only active applicants’ official transcripts and completes at most two evaluations.

Our guide to how many credits will transfer explains caps and residency rules at other schools.

Work training, exams and a portfolio can earn credit, but federal aid does not pay for them

TESU says 57% of all its students earn credit for prior learning (its July 27, 2026 article). These are its four routes. TECEP and portfolio prices come from TESU’s fee page for the August 2026 term; the rest come from the July article, and the ACE fees are ACE’s own transcript charges.

TESU's credit-for-prior-learning routes, from its July 27, 2026 article and its TECEP and PLA tuition page
Route What it costs
Professional Learning Review Free; credit is tied to the specific organization that sponsored your training or issued your credential
ACE and NCCRS credit recommendations ACE transcript $20, then $15 each (ACE's fees); NCCRS free. Up to 90 credits toward a bachelor's
TECEP exams (CLEP and DSST also accepted) $54 a credit lower level, $81 upper level; a 3-credit lower-level exam is $162, by our math
Portfolio assessment (PLA 1010) Pay for the 3-credit course at $449 or $584 a credit; within it, earn up to 12 credits of portfolio assessment at no additional cost

The July article gave $53 and $80 for TECEP; the fee page in effect from the August 2026 term shows $54 and $81. Portfolios cannot be used for capstones, practicum or field experience courses, physical education activity courses “and most English composition or math courses.”

TESU’s aid handbook says federal aid is awarded only for its Guided Study or Online courses, not for TECEP examinations, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), e-Pack courses or NC-PACE courses. Plan to pay for exams and portfolios another way.

Our guide to credit by exam and prior learning compares TESU’s rules with other adult-focused schools.

Federal aid at TESU starts at 6 credits a term of online or Guided Study courses

TESU counts 6 credits a term as half-time for undergraduates, the floor for federal loans. Its handbook sets Pell by enrollment: “12 or more credits per term are considered full time, 9 to 11 credits are considered three quarter time, 6 to 8 half-time and 1 to 5 less than half-time.”

Pell pays up to $7,395 for 2026-27 to eligible undergraduates, and StudentAid.gov says the amount depends on, among other things, “your status as a full-time or part-time student.” Our guide to how Pell pays part-time students shows how a lighter load changes the award.

Federal loans shrink too. StudentAid.gov: “If you’re enrolled less than full time for an academic year, your annual loan limits shown in the chart (or the lower limits set by your school) are adjusted downward proportionally based on your level of enrollment.” Our guide to part-time student loan limits shows the cut.

In 2024-25, 27% of TESU undergraduates had a Pell Grant and 26% had a federal loan. TESU’s federal school code is 011648.

42% of TESU’s 2017-18 starters earned an award within eight years

MeasureThomas Edison State University
Earned an award within 8 years (all students who started in 2017-18)42%
Graduated within 6 years (first-time, full-time, fall 2019 cohort)Not published
Median earnings 6 years after starting (2015-16 and 2016-17 entrants)$69,533
Median earnings 10 years after starting (2011-12 and 2012-13 entrants)$75,164
Graduates’ median earnings 4 years after finishing (2017-18 and 2018-19 finishers)$85,816
Graduates’ median federal loan debt (entered repayment in fiscal 2024 and 2025)$12,341

These are school-wide figures. Your payoff depends on the program, the job you aim for and how many credits you still have to buy. Two 6-credit terms on the per-credit plan cost a New Jersey resident 2 x $2,692 = $5,384, by our math from TESU’s table.

Who TESU fits, and the watch-outs

It fits if

  • You have credits, training or certifications from several places. Community college credit and ACE and NCCRS credit each count up to 90 credits toward a bachelor’s, and the Professional Learning Review is free.
  • You can only study part-time. 98% of undergraduates studied part-time in fall 2024, and TESU says most undergraduate programs, except the BSN, let you begin a new course every month.
  • You serve or served in the military. The military rate is $250 a credit, and 1,583 undergraduates there received Defense Department Tuition Assistance in 2023-24 (College Navigator).

Watch-outs

  • No federal net price to compare. Scorecard publishes none for TESU, so ask for a written cost estimate based on your evaluated credits.
  • Federal aid skips prior learning. It does not pay for TECEP exams, portfolio assessment or e-Pack courses.
  • Residency costs money either way. Per-credit and flat-rate students take 15 TESU credits or pay $3,468 for Edison Accelerate, and TESU’s page ties an additional fee to not graduating within 15 months.
  • Grades and age limits. English composition and your area of study need a C or better, and “some degree programs have requirements around the age of courses used in the area of study.”

Check your own aid before you apply to TESU

The aid check shows your Pell estimate, a possible state grant, Work-Study and your federal loan limits under the rules for the year you start (2026-27 or 2027-28). It takes about two minutes, asks for no name or email, and assumes full-time study; it notes that less than full-time enrollment gets a prorated Pell award.

TESU’s financial aid office sets your actual offer, and you need to be fully admitted before it awards a package.
